Italy’s Nicolo Zaniolo to miss Euro 2024 through injury

Written by on May 18, 2024

Italy midfielder Nicolo Zaniolo says he will miss the 2024 European Championship through injury.

The 24-year-old was forced off 14 minutes after being introduced as a second-half substitute during Aston Villa’s draw with Liverpool on Monday evening.

In a post on Instagram, Zaniolo said he would “have to give up the dream” of representing Italy at this summer’s tournament.

Zaniolo wrote: “Thank you for your support in these hours Villans and to the many Italian and Turkish fans. I can’t wait to get back on the pitch stronger than before!

“Unfortunately I will have to give up the dream of representing my country in a major competition. But that day will come, I’m sure of it and it will be beautiful! Go Azzurri!”

Zaniolo had just returned from a month out to come off the bench against Liverpool, only for his comeback to be cut short.

It means he will have played his final match for Villa this season, having joined the club on loan from Galatasaray last summer. The loan move included the option to sign the Italy international permanently.

He has featured 40 times in all competitions this season, scoring four goals and helping Villa secure Champions League qualification, which was confirmed after Tottenham Hotspur were beaten by Manchester City on Tuesday.

Zaniolo is the latest Italy player to be ruled out of Euro 2024 through injury, after Tottenham full-back Destiny Udogie was confirmed out of the tournament last month due to a muscular problem.

The Villa midfielder featured four times in Euro 2024 qualifying and has been capped 19 times at senior international level.

Italy are the defending European champions after their penalty shootout victory over England in the Euro 2020 final.

Euro 2024 begins on June 14, with Italy opening their group stage campaign against Albania on June 15 in Dortmund. Luciano Spalletti’s side have been drawn alongside Croatia and Spain in Group B.
