Ex-Red Wings goalie posts easy shutout for U.S. at Worlds

Former Detroit Red Wings goaltender Alex Nedeljkovic needed to make only 10 saves for the shutout and the United States defeated France 5-0 Thursday at the World Championship in Ostrava, Czechia.

The U.S. outshot France 54-10 and improved to 2-0-1-1 (W-OTL-OTL-L) for seven points.

Team USA scored four times in the first period, getting a pair of goals from Matt Boldy, who also added an assist for three points. Brock Nelson had a goal and two assists. Johnny Gaudreau and Shane Pinto also scored for the U.S.

Red Wings defenseman Jeff Petry did not play for the U.S.

The U.S. plays Poland on Friday (2:20 p.m. ET, NHL Network).

Sweden 3, Kazakhstan 1: Marcus Johansson, Linus Johansson and Fabian Zetterlund scored as Sweden stayed perfect at 4-0-0-0 (12 points). Red Wings forward Lucas Raymond did not figure in the scoring, registering two shots and an evcn plus-minus rating in 17:18.
