I fought my way back.

RB Leipzig fullback Benjamin Henrichs spoke on his personal disappointment on missing out on the 2022 World Cup and the feeling of being able to return to the German national team for the German-hosted Euros on Thursday.

The RB Leipzig fullback tandem of David Raum and Benjamin Henrichs have fought their way back to the German national team after falling down the pecking order over the past two years. Raum ended up losing his starting left back role after poor performances in the 2022 tournament. Henrichs wasn’t selected for Bundestrainer Hansi Flick’s side at all despite the fact that Flick had a need at right back. The pair are now back as part of the Euro squad.

Henrichs remains behind projected right back starter Joshua Kimmich and Raum (one assumes) will serve as a backup behind VfB Stuttgart’s Maximilian Mittelstädt. It remains not entirely inconceivable that Nagelsmann may turn to the RB teammates as part of his in-tournament tactical tweaking. For a time, Bundestrainer Joachim Löw employed an RB fullback tandem of Lukas Klostermann and Marcel Halstenberg as his starting fullback duo.

“I’m incredibly excited to be going,” Henrichs remarked when commenting on his selection Thursday, “In the end, hard work pays off. Unfortunately, I missed out on the 2022 World Cup and I have to admit that it was a bitter blow for me. Now I’ve more or less fought my way back.”

“I was at every one of Julian Nagelsmann’s training sessions,” Henrichs continued, “when I got the news my family and my boys called me straight away. We all danced together and were very happy. It was just a really nice feeling.”
