Caitlin Clark had an up-and-down introduction to the WNBA on Tuesday night, scoring 20 points on just 5-of-15 shooting from the field with 10 turnovers in the Indiana Fever’s 92-71 loss to the Connecticut Sun.

“I think definitely the physicality,” Clark told reporters when asked if there was anything in particular that led to the high number of turnovers (2:30 mark). “I think also just some uncharacteristic stuff. I pick up the ball and travel. I dribble off my foot. I pass it on the inbound and turn it over. So just a few things where you have to be crisper.”

Clark wasn’t the only one who was a bit careless with the ball. The Fever finished the game with 25 overall turnovers, playing a major part in the Sun putting up 66 field-goal attempts to just 50 for Indiana.

Clark did hit four threes in the game, but was just 1-of-4 from the field from inside the arc.

“I think I would have enjoyed playing better. I think we would have all enjoyed playing better. I think we would have loved to win,” Clark said when asked if it was a relief to finally make her WNBA debut. “I didn’t really feel much pressure coming into this game. I was just trying to do whatever I could to help the team and help us win. Like I said, you just go back to the drawing board and learn from it. I’m sure we’re excited to play on Thursday.”

Clark’s second and third WNBA games will be against the loaded New York Liberty, which features the superstar duo of Breanna Stewart and Sabrina Ionescu. Not an easy way to start her professional career.

All eyes will be on Clark every time she steps on the court after her legendary college career at Iowa. The WNBA is loaded with star power and top talent, but Clark energized the sport in a way that few athletes ever have.

That also puts a target on her back. She showed flashes of her immense talent on Tuesday night, but her performance was also a reminder that she has plenty of room to grow, and that the players awaiting her in the WNBA aren’t to be taken lightly.
