The 1990s Dallas Cowboys are going to get the Last Dance treatment.

Netflix announced Wednesday it will air a 10-part documentary on the Cowboys chronicling Jerry Jones’ purchase of the team in 1989 through the franchise’s three subsequent Super Bowl titles.

The series will include interviews with Jones along with retired stars Troy Aikman, Michael Irvin, Deion Sanders and Emmitt Smith and former coaches Jimmy Johnson and Barry Switzer.

Even leaving aside of the off-field stories surrounding the Cowboys during that era, the documentary’s producers will have ample ground to cover strictly from the gridiron.

There was Jones’ decision to fire the legendary Tom Landry and install Johnson, who had won a national championship with Miami but hadn’t worked in the NFL to that point.

Then there was the Herschel Walker trade, long held up as the gold standard for lopsided swaps. That deal helped lay the foundation for Dallas’ dynasty with Smith, Russell Maryland and Darren Woodson all joining the team through the return on Walker.

The unraveling of the relationship between Jones and Johnson will undoubtedly be covered as well. Johnson resigned in March 1994 on the heels of a second straight Super Bowl win and amid rumors of irreconcilable differences between he and the owner.

Barry Switzer briefly maintained what Johnson built, with Dallas capturing its most recent title in 1995. At the time, nobody could’ve known what lay on the horizon beyond that for the organization. Thirty years later, the Cowboys are still chasing the heights they enjoyed in the mid-90s.

It will be interesting to see how much the Netflix documentary is both a nostalgic recollection of the good old days and a postmortem for how Dallas went from writing the team-building blueprint to becoming a source of annual mockery when it inevitably comes up short in the playoffs.
