Club under no pressure to sell Guimaraes or Isak

Written by on May 2, 2024

Eddie Howe’s Newcastle United side still have everything to play for in the current campaign, despite it being a disappointing season overall for the Magpies.

Currently on 53 points and with four games left to play, Europa League football could still be secured for next season.

Whilst that might be considered a come down after the epic Champions League experience of the current season, it’s the best the club can manage after a few months where Newcastle suffered from the most unbelievable amount of injuries.

Newcastle don’t have to sell two of their star players

No club in the world could’ve dealt with a similar scenario, and one only has to look at the way in which Paris Saint-Germain were dismantled at St. James’ Park, when Eddie Howe had a fully fit squad to choose from, to understand exactly what the squad are capable of.

Key to their way of working has been the form of Bruno Guimaraes and Alexander Isak, the former being the fulcrum for the Magpies and the latter a consistent menace to opposition defences as his 23 goals (WhoScored) proves.

Newcastle don’t have to sell Alexander Isak or Bruno Guimaraes

Given that every club needs to stick within the parameters of Financial Fair Play and the Premier League’s Profit and Sustainability rules, it’s believed that Newcastle were sailing close to the wind in that regard and, as a result, might well have had to cash in on one of their star players this summer.

However, the Magpies have been given a significant boost with the news, via inews, that neither Guimaraes or Isak will need to be the fall guy.

It isn’t clear who will need to make way in order for Newcastle to keep on the right side of FFP, but the knowledge that two of the club’s best players in 2023/24 are still likely to be plying their trade on Tyneside in 2024/25 is a huge win for the club and its supporters.
